Advent: A Time to Prepare and Praise

If your family is at all like mine growing up, you’re finding this season filled with a number of things: Busy schedules, Christmas decorating and tree choosing, holiday baking, gift buying and wrapping, parties and family gatherings – The list goes on. Sometimes, the holidays get here and pass so quickly and in such a blur, we feel we’ve missed what Christmas is really about.

Throughout church history, Advent, the four weeks leading up to Christmas, has reminded people to intentionally set aside time to remember and meditate on what Christ coming to earth really means and how God’s love was on full display that night in the stable with Mary and Joseph and a newborn baby. We encourage you and your family to take time throughout the next few weeks and allow yourselves to do the same. To help you prepare your hearts and minds for the birth of Christ, we’ve got some Advent resources and opportunities. Below are some links for fun and engaging Advent materials we’ve found and loved online. Some of these can be done one at a time as you like while others are designed to be done every day leading up to Christmas.

Blogger Adrielle Booker has a number of Advent resources she’s collected:

We also found Meredith, another blogger, had a brilliant Advent idea in connection with one of our favorite children’s Bibles:

And Willow Creek Church near Chicago put together some fun Advent cards full of activities and ideas for you and your family:

We also invite your family to join us on December 12th at 7pm for special all-church Advent service entitled: Following the Light. Filled with fun skits in the fashion of old-time radio, live music and carol singing, poetry, and even a rap, we’re excited to help you celebrate together the wonder and joy of Christ’s birth. Goodies will be served afterwards, and you can bring some of your favorite holiday treats to share with others. And kids are encouraged to bring a blanket or stuffed animal to help them cuddle in for the evening as we unfold the Christmas story – They can even come in their pajamas!

However you decide to spend this Advent season, we encourage you to take the time with your family to celebrate, discuss, and thank God for the birth of His Son.
